Local High Streets

Posted on 1st Sep 2019 in Campaigning

Our high streets need revamped. Since the opening of Rushden Lakes and a few larger chains, the high streets in East Northamptonshire, especially in Raunds and Irthlingborough seem to have suffered.

This week, I was sad to hear that yet again this area hasn't been chosen for the 'High Street Fund'. 50 towns were chosen by the Government to receive extra support and for whatever reason, they chose not to put the money here.

How can we save our high streets? I have a few ideas and if I were our MP, I'd be lobbying national government to deliver:

1) reform of business rates so it's a more even playing field;

2) financial incentives to councils and owners of high streets to ensure premises are fit for the 21st century including supporting accessibility;

3) a register of landlords of empty shops in each local authority with an emphasis on having shops filled; and

4) look at innovative ways to keep a bank and post office presence in the centre of towns.

What do you think?
